Operators at Barrett Paving’s pit in Freedom Township ran into clay seams inside the planned mining area in mid-summer. Barrett asked ASTI to determine the location of sand and gravel that had no clay seams.
ASTI assigned a geologist to the site; the geologist made 18 soil borings on 200-ft centers to find the limit of the clay seams. Field work was completed within 2 weeks. ASTI developed soil boring logs and correlated them to produce cross-sections showing the location of sand and gravel. Review of the findings with the operators resulted in a new dredging and excavation plan for the remainder of the mining season
