As part of landfill expansion planning, ASTI Environmental developed a wetland permit application and mitigation plan that required negotiating a conservation easement through existing easements and establishing a long-term management plan for 200 acres of preserved wetlands. Since the existing permitted Pine Tree Acres Landfill footprint was surrounded by forested wetlands, ASTI recognized that the project would require a top-tier alternatives analysis and mitigation plan.
ASTI conducted the wetland delineation, MiRAM functional assessment, and endangered species survey on the landfill property. They successfully negotiated a wetland permit with both EGLE and the EPA and developed a wetland mitigation plan, incorporating both creation and preservation components on a site within a mile of the Pine Tree Acres Landfill property.
As part of the mitigation efforts, approximately 40 acres of mitigation wetlands were created, and nearly 200 acres were preserved, including high-quality forested uplands and wetlands, several tributaries to the Salt River, and a significant upland buffer. ASTI oversaw the completion of the conservation easement, developed the monitoring plan, managed construction in 2018, and continues to be actively engaged in monitoring activities.
