ASTI Environmental was hired by the Oakland County International Airport (OCIA) to provide services for monitoring PFAS in groundwater and a grant application. ASTI prepared a successful application for a Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) grant from EGLE to fund the investigation. To evaluate whether the OCIA was contributing to the regional PFAS groundwater plume, ASTI recognized that monitoring wells upgradient of the airport were needed. ASTI worked closely with EGLE and the OCIA to cite potential locations for upgradient PFAS monitoring. ASTI was successful in including both upgradient and cross-gradient wells in the EGLE grant. After the grant was awarded, ASTI installed a series of nested wells near known locations on the OCIA where PFAS-containing Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) was historically released. The wells were developed, surveyed, sampled, and analyzed for PFAS compounds in accordance with applicable guidelines and industry best practice. To mitigate future PFAS contamination, ASTI prepared a “Best Management Practices policy” for OCIA’s handling and use of AFFF.
