The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on June 24, 2026, that more than $270 million in Brownfields grants have been awarded to 190 communities across the country. The funding spans Assessment, Cleanup, and Multipurpose grant types, supporting communities in identifying contaminated properties, conducting environmental site assessments, and planning or carrying out cleanup activities.
Michigan communities are among the recipients of this funding cycle, continuing a strong track record of federal investment in the state’s brownfield redevelopment efforts.
What this Means for Awarded Communities
Receiving a Brownfields Assessment Grant is an important first step but turning that funding into results requires experienced environmental consultants who understand both the technical and regulatory requirements of the process. Grant recipients typically move quickly into Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, followed by Phase II investigations where contamination is suspected, and ultimately cleanup planning.
